VETERAN SID BUSCH to honor HEROES at Rolla 10K
By Marilyn Sweitzer, Special to the Phelps County FOCUS, Salem News, and Pulaski Weekly
Sid Busch didn’t set out to become a sports celebrity. He’s been on television, was featured in Runner’s
World magazine, has 1,800 followers on Facebook, and won the US Presidency (unofficially); but Sid only
started running to keep his job. On November 18 th , Sid will be lining up to walk the HEROES 10K at Lions
Club Park in Rolla, alongside others wishing to honor our veterans and military.
The journey began, as Sid describes, “I was working as a seabee on a submarine. I only reached up to tap
a gauge,” when a disk in his spine ruptured. He was taken off the submarine in a helicopter in
“excruciating pain.” Following the injury, a Navy medical review board wanted to medically disqualify
Sid, but he offered them a challenge instead; if he could complete a marathon, then he could keep his
job. Sid did both, retiring from the Navy with 27 years as a Senior Chief Petty Officer (sonar technician)
under his belt.
That first marathon (which he finished in an impressive under 4 hour finish time) led to 202 marathons,
1,123 half marathons, and “more 10Ks, 5Ks, and other events than I can count” Sid says, and sparked a
mission to honor veterans and military. Sid is the unofficial ‘face’ of the Air Force Marathon after having
completed it ten times; he is a staff member for the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington D.C.; and
still competes at 77 years of age, although “I just walk now.” In every event, Sid carries a flag,
representing fallen soldiers; he states, “in the beginning, one of my friends had the idea to participate in
various events with me, calling ourselves ‘Running for Fallen Heroes.’ We ran with the name of a fallen
soldier, then gave his family our shirt and medal at the finish line. At first, we started a website to
request names of soldiers to run for, but it wasn’t long before I was swamped” and the mission took on
a life of its own. At one of the bases, Sid says, he was nominated for president during the 2008
presidential election. “I ran against Obama on the (fictitious) ‘Running Party’ ticket, and I won!” Sid
Sid will be staying in the area two nights; he’ll be a speaker at the Pasta Party/EXPO on Friday evening in
Salem (free to HEROES participants who RSVP) then the next morning, will line up for the 10K with flag
in hand. Has he been to Missouri before? “Yes, once- I came for the Frog Hill Half Marathon in
Waynesville, but I got lost in St. Louis. This time, I’ve got good maps to get to Rolla!” Melissa Martinez-
Sharp, who coordinates Frog Hill and has been a HEROES Ambassador/Marathoner since 2016, linked
HEROES with Sid, who will be driving from Charleston, S.C. for the event. Sid says, “I will continue to
participate as long as it is fun for me, and as long as there are soldiers to honor.” He continued, “I think
that it should be required for every American to visit Arlington National Cemetery to visit the graves of
soldiers, most of whom were just kids (when they died). It drives home the message that ‘Freedom is not
Free.’” Sid states, “I think the National Anthem should be changed, from ‘o’er the land of the free, and
the home of the brave’ to, ‘the land of the free BECAUSE of the brave.’”
You can Honor our Heroes alongside Sid in the 10K; whether you register to walk, ruck, or run the full,
half, or relay marathons, the three mile 5K, or the half-mile Honor Walk (Honor Walk is between 12-
2pm) on November 18 th at Lions Club Park. Registration and details about the event may be found by

1. What to Bring to the RaceRace Essentials Don't start your race on the wrong foot. Always have your race bib visible for our video and still photographers, as well as timing strips. You will receive your Bib at Packet Pick up at our free EXPO/PASTA PARTY in Salem the evening before the race, or just before your event on Race Day.
Stay Hydrated While water stations dot the course (every two miles from mile0-13 then every mile to the finish line), a personal water bottle, especially filled with your preferred electrolyte mix, can be a lifesaver.
Quick Energy Boosters Energy gels, chews, or even bananas can keep fatigue at bay, especially for those tackling longer distances. We will have snacks at every aid station and offer gels at mile 20.
Gear Check Bag For those utilizing the gear check option, pack essentials—change of clothes, post-race snacks, and personal care items. Our Gear Check Guy (a veteran himself) will transport your gear bag (attach the tear-off label from your bib to your bag) will collect the gear bags at the start of both the full and half marathons, and transport them inside the Lion’s Den at the finish line.
2. Race Day Attire: Dressing for SuccessWeather-Ready Running Gear November chills call for moisture-wicking base layers. Yet, a last-minute weather check ensures you’re not underdressed or overdressed. Check our website for any last-minute weather updates! Might be nice to have inexpensive outerwear to shed if it warms up: we collect all discards and donate them to charity.
Reliable Running Shoes Comfort and reliability are key. Ensure shoes are broken in but not worn out. Same thing with socks: don’t wear new socks on Race Day! Break them in first.
Anti-Chafe Solutions From quality socks to anti-chafe balm, every detail matters. Minimize discomfort and maximize performance. Seams can create chafing your first long event. Protect those spots as well!
Be Visible Dawn or dusk runners should consider reflective gear for added safety. Earbuds are great for passing the time but are discouraged because you need to be aware of others passing you/traffic, plus you’d miss the cattle mooing their encouragement!
3. On Race Day: Setting ExpectationsEmbrace the Atmosphere The starting line will buzz with excitement. Pace yourself and soak in the positive vibes. THE ARMY ROCK BAND will be playing for you at two of the start points!! HOO-AH!
Route Surprises From scenic views to unexpected inclines, anticipate a mix of challenges and pleasures. Look for the funny/inspirational signs along the way, and the sponsors of the 200 US Flags lining our course!
Crowd Support Expect enthusiastic crowds in Rolla.. Their cheers can offer a much-needed morale boost. The volunteers at our Aid Stations have been called the Best in the Industry!
Virtual Participation For virtual runners, recreate the race ambiance at home with family cheer squads, and personalized water stations. Perhaps wear a placard of the veteran(s) you are honoring. Or carry a flag to show your cause and your patriotism!

USO: A Beacon of Comfort for Our Heroes Around the Clock
It was a chilly morning as we groggily stepped into STL Airport at 3:30 am. With our kids battling fatigue and a barrage of luggage trailing behind us, it was shaping up to be a long day. Yet, as we meandered near the baggage claim, a heartwarming sight greeted us — the inviting doors of the USO.
With unparalleled warmth and kindness, USO volunteers Garry and Lois Truman instantly made us feel at home. They handed our children delightful books and cuddly stuffed animals, and for the adults, steaming cups of coffee were paired with savory sandwiches and delicious french toast. Beyond food, the USO offered a sanctuary - a playroom for the young ones, chargers to power our phones, and a tranquil space for a much-needed rest.
But the USO offers more than just momentary relief for travelers. It stands as an unwavering pillar of support for our often on-the-move veterans and active-duty military. This incredible organization ensures that these heroes have a haven to eat, rest, and rejuvenate, no matter where their duties might take them.
What makes the USO even more remarkable is its foundation. It thrives solely on the spirit of volunteerism and the generosity of donations. Every sandwich served, every book given, and every comforting space provided is thanks to dedicated volunteers and kind-hearted donors.
Spanning across the nation, the USO has numerous locations, each echoing the organization's commitment to honoring our military members. They extend their gratitude to our veterans and active military personnel, acknowledging the sacrifices they make for our country every single day.
Yet, as expansive as their network is, the USO is always in need of helping hands and generous hearts. Whether it's volunteering your time or contributing through donations, every bit helps in ensuring our heroes find comfort during their journeys.
In our brief encounter at STL Airport, the USO showcased what it truly stands for: unwavering support for our nation's bravest. For the service and sacrifice of our veterans, the USO extends their heartfelt thanks. And for the comfort and care they provided to us and countless others, we say, "Thank you, USO!"
